The Greatroot Hold is an ancient village, one with a grand history spanning centuries into the past, and yet even their reign once came to an unfortunate end. A poisonous fungi, spreading quick like a disease throughout their home-tree, killed every last citizen of the Hold before they could know what became of them. It lived, bred, and sustained its lethal existence amongst the Great Tree for many moons to follow, feeding on all forms of life, until it finally withered and died. Since falling dormant, the Great Tree has finally had the necessary time to rest and heal its wounds. Now fully revived, the former home of the Greatroot Hold is lush and green once more, with leaves sprouting from every branch, moss, lichen, and all assortments of vegetation reclaiming their place. Many creatures have already begun to take residence, the Hold now bursting into a lively place. The Great Tree calls for its loyal citizens to return, and so one brave soul must step forward to take reign where the last once stood.

Common Villager Species
Mousefolk: Sentient mice which stand on their hind-legs, walking and operating rather humanlike. Much like domestic or wild mice, they can have a large array of markings and fur-patterns. Their clothing is usually plain and simple cloth, as they don’t usually pay much mind to it. Most carry a pouch to gather and store things that they forage.
- Around the size of normal mice, 3-4 1/2 inches in height
- Natural skin/hair colors
- Any eye color
Birdfolk: Sentient birds which stand on their hind-legs, walking and operating rather humanlike, and with an extra set of hands or talons on the arm of their wings. The birdfolk which inhabit the village are of smaller bird species, usually no larger than a finch or sparrow. Their clothing usually varies depending on their rank and profession, sometimes more decorated than others.
- Natural skin/hair colors
- Any eye color
Pixies: Humanoids, usually based off of certain insects (moths, butterflies, dragonflies, mantises, etc.). Have long, pointed ears and humanlike hair. Their bodies are usually thin and their facial features are sharp, elongated. They resemble smaller versions of faeries. They have antennae and wings resembling their insect counterparts. Pixies take pride in their clothing, and usually wear decorated garb that is finely crafted.
- Grow 3-4 inches tall. Have the ability to, using magic, grow to average human heights when wanted.
- Hair color and skin color correlate - green skin means green hair, blue skin means blue hair.
- Possible skin colors: F-M
- Any hair color
- Any eye color
Sprites: There are different types of sprites depending on their origin (water sprites, forest sprites, flower sprites, etc.) Straying farther from the humanoid look, they have sharp facial features with small bodies. Their ears are pointed and vary in size. Their bodies are made of skin, but certain parts seem to take on plant-like features and growths. Additionally, water sprites have fins and are adapted to swimming and breathing underwater. May or may not have wings, usually thin and translucent, like a dragonfly’s wings. They do not have much hair, for they either only have small tufts of it, or have plants that resemble hair.Their clothing is less finely crafted, and are usually minimal, made from plants and other means they manage to find.
- Usually smaller than pixies, but not by too much, between 2-4 inches tall
- Hair color and skin color correlate - green skin means green hair, blue skin means blue hair
- Possible skin colors: F-M
- Any hair color
- Any eye color
Skilled Animal Species
Gryphowls: Are the equivalent of dragons. Gryphowls are a smaller griffin subspecies that are half owl and half domestic cat. They are strong and powerful fliers that can easily navigate a forest.
Jackalopes: Are the equivalent of horses. These are simply rabbits with antlers or horns sprouted from their head, coming in all different shapes and sizes, and appearing in a wide array of colorations. They are swift and quick on their feet, but can startle easily at times due to their instinctual cautiousness. Mousefolk can talk to Jackalopes, in the limited lapine that they are able to pick-up on, though most other villagers are unable to.
Lizard-drakes: Are the equivalent of firelizards. Lizard-drakes are small, dragon-like creatures yet only the size of small lizards or skinks and lacking any wings.
Leaflets: Are the equivalent of dogs. These spry creatures are abundantly found among the Great Tree, finding their ways into the village from time to time. They are loyal creatures that take well to being trained and can be very useful for scouting or border patrols. Their distinct calls can be recognized by their trainer for what they may refer to or warn of. (x)
Mothcats: Are the equivalent of cats. These creatures are tiny half-cat and half-moth hybrids. They're friendly, fairly docile, and skilled pest-control, keeping the aphids and other bothersome creatures at bay among the Great Tree. They are often seen wandering here and there, though a select few will befriend the villagers and keep residence in their homes as they feed off the pests. (x)
Hummingbirds: Are the equivalent of birds. These fast-flying creatures can not only serve as a mount for select villagers, but they are also skilled lookouts. (x)
Mooshrooms: Are the equivalent of cows. They are small, miniature-sized cows with fungi sprouting along their bodies. (x)
Lupine Fox: Are the equivalent of foxes. These creatures are small, fox-like creatures entirely resembling a lupine flower. Their pelt is covered in petals that are in any range of colors common for lupines, such as blue, purple, and pink.
Woollypillars: Are the equivalent of sheep. They are a large, sluggish, caterpillar-like species that spends most of their days slowly grazing across dewy moss patches. They grow thick wool across their body that can be sheared and used to craft durable, fine clothing and other wares. Much of the Hold's clothing is made from the wool of Woollypillars.

Location
The Greatroot Hold takes residence within an ancient tree they've long deemed the Great Tree. It's believed that the tree has been rooted in its place for centuries, not once affected by the forces of nature. The tree itself is at least 300 feet in height and 60 foot in diameter. Its size is far superior to the forest around it, though only enough to force is canopy above the tree line. Outer structures line its trunk, with sturdy bridges linking the different sections. These are often clumps of homes for villagers, or common areas such as the training grounds, armory, and simple lookout stations also for recreation. Inside the trunk is mostly hollow, with a thick wall of bark and wood walling each side. There are even more homes within this structure, including the living quarters of the Holdmaster. There is a large great hall upon entering through the main gates. The gates open into a spacious room with a thick root at the very center spiraling up to the very top of the tree, allowing villagers to reach each level of the Hold. Even at the top canopy of the Great Tree, the upper branches are lined with even more homes and gathering spaces. Often winged villagers will choose to live here, as well as winged mounts such as Gryphowls and Hummingbirds. At the base of the tree a wide brook runs alongside the front gate, a small wooden bridge linking the other side to the staircase of the Hold's entrance. Watersprites live beneath the surface here, their homes constructed into the sides of the bank. The area surrounding the Great Tree is mostly dense forests that span for miles, rivers and streams winding between.
Terminology
Great Tree/home-tree: Names villagers use to refer to the tree they call home.
Religion & Beliefs
Most villagers of the Hold uphold their beliefs in a single deity known as the Life Mother, who can be compared to that of Mother Earth and other similar figures. The Life Mother is the birthmother or creationist of all things alive, be it the world around them, all the plants and animals, or even the water and rock that form its surface. They believe that the Life Mother continues to maintain the balances of their world, and without her, there would be chaos and turmoil. Each and every being of life plays a role in their very existence and in maintaining the harmony of their world to keep everything afloat. The Life Mother does not take one single form, though most imagine her skin glows as bright as the sun.
The Shaman or Holdmaster of the Hold will honor the Life Mother by acquiring a Sunstone, usually a small rock or pebble that reflects the sun's rays. They will then take the Sunstone to their altar and ask the Life Mother any of their special requests. The Sunstones remain at the altar for the duration of the Shaman's time in their position, and once they retire and must be replaced, their collective Sunstones are cast back into the stream to replenish the water's banks.
Early Pre-Hold History
As long as the Great Tree has been standing, there's always been creatures living within, appreciating the bountiful life that it provides. The Hold itself, however, was not established until only a few centuries ago ─ which, in terms of the age of the tree itself, is young in its history. The Hold was established by an elder Sprite known as Perriere Bluewing. He banded together with the assortment of other folk living among the tree and decided to officially name themselves residents of the Greatroot Hold. Perriere was influential in constructing many of their early laws and ways of life, those that ensured content and happy living for all villagers, and protection from outside threats. The residents no longer had to venture into the unknown alone, and had a safe place to call home. Together, the early residents along with their Holdmaster Perriere constructed the innerworkings of the Hold and made it into an inhabitable place. The Hold would continue to thrive, along with aid from the Life Mother herself, even long past Perriere Bluewing passed on and his position was replaced by a new worthy candidate. Since then, many Holdmasters have come and gone, serving the Great Tree, the Life Mother, and all of the loyal inhabitants of the tree. That was until only a few decades ago, when the fungus first appeared. At the time, Holdmaster Ormara Finch had steadily ran the Great Hold for a few content years. All seemed well, until word of a strange mold appearing on the lower sections of the trunk began to stir. At first, the mold grew in small spots, seeming nothing of great concern. But it rapidly began to spread, and before they knew it, the fungus took complete hold of the tree. The Hold watched as the tree began to die, its leaves turning brown and falling to the ground below in the middle of a warm spring. All the while, the fungus began releasing dangerous spores that the villagers would inhale and fall deathly ill. Before they know what would become of them, many of the Hold fell victim to the toxic fungi, and those who survived fled before it was too late for them as well.
