all he could remember was the fire; he had been trapped in his home when the flames had overcome the small house. as an earth elemental who had deep connections to the ground and the plants, he felt more in danger than he ever had before in his life, and while he attempted to cover his body in a sort of protective armor of rocks from the stone that was once his home, he still felt panicked as he stumbled through the burning rubble, trying to make his way into the fresh air. he barely was able to get a few calls out for help when he felt heat at the back of his head, and in a moment he realized that his curly green locks were on fire. he began to panic even more as he shook his head violently, completely unaware of how to get the flames to go out.
luckily for him, a water-bender had been running past and heard his screams; she covered him in a wave of water that easily doused the fire, but also drenched the rest of his clothes. his yellow eyes were wide as he met the gaze of the woman, who he vaguely recognized as one of the kingdom's hunters, and she let out an annoyed grunt as she whipped at his rear with her water, forcing him to move. the pair raced into the nearby trees and ran as far as they could, fighting the bitter cold that struck them from being improperly clothed in the icy terrain.
--
anai was comfortably sleeping in her bed, reaching every so often over to the side of the bed where her wife should be laying but wasn't; however, she was drifting still in and out of consciousness, so she didn't fully have the mind to think about where her partner could be. it wasn't until she had shifted to lay above the bedsheets due to being surprisingly warm that her wife burst into the room and began harshly shaking the human in her bed. anai shot up straight in surprise, ready to grumble at her wife for waking her in such a manner, but the wideness and fear in her silver eyes was enough to cause anai to grasp the air-bender's arms.
"winair, what is it? whats wrong?" she tried to keep her voice steady but she couldnt help the slight waver to it; she had never seen her wife so worked up like this. the icy-haired woman began to urge anai out of the bed, tugging and pushing at her.
"its sable. she's gone mad. she's started burning down the kingdom. almost everything is on fire, our corner of the kingdom is the last bit she's coming to, we have to leave, now!" winair's normally sweet and melodic voice was more of a loud screech as she used her air-bending to force her wife to stand up. the human began rummaging through their dressers, but her wife shoved her towards the door with only a jacket in her hands.
"their isn't time love! go!" winair and anai managed to slip out of their home just in time, for as they made it to the edges of the treeline, they saw the demon approaching their corner of the kingdom, her fire engulfing everything, including their home.
--
the pair were nearing the border of the kingdom's land, huddled very close together for warmth, winair attempting to use her air-bending to create a tunnel around them so that the bitter winds didn't strike them. anai lifted her head from its resting place on her wife's shoulder as she heard another pair of voices through the harsh whipping of the winds.
"hello? is someone else out there?" the girl called out, her and her wife coming to a stop as they looked around, the voices growing louder.
eventually, anai's soft green eyes met the familiar blue eyes of a fellow hunter that she recognized from going on various hunting parties with, kasandra a water-bender.
at the same time, winair's silver eyes landed on the singed green hair of a man she recognized as a fellow farmer who she had gone on several gathering parties with before, an earth-bender named clayton she believed.
it was clear in that moment that the four of them were united now; they had all survived the same attempt on their lives, and in some strange way that had bonded them, these four people who previously were nothing more than acquaintances. the four of them stuck together from then on out, the weeks turning into months, but they had a goal, a place they were headed.
before winair had joined the kingdom of sanguis, she had been a traveler who had been to many places and heard tales of many more. one of these stories was of a floating island located in the mountains, which was known as a safe haven for elementals and humans alike who had been through various trials and tribulations.
nearly a year had passed before they finally found this rlung temple, winair having to help each of the other three members of her party float up onto the island one at a time. they were greeted by a young man with buzzed hair, kind eyes, a scar over one eye, a variety of tattoos, and a warm smile.

unlike the air nomads of the olden days, ralo could technically trace his family lineage back for a few hundred years, to the time of avatar korra and the harmonic convergence. during the convergence, random non-bending humans from all nations were given the ability to air bend; one of these people had been ralo's great grandfather, who had joined master tenzin in his new version of the air nomads, known as the air acolytes, in their attempt to fight corruption and disorder across the world.
when he was just a boy, avatar guang was still alive; a man from the earth kingdom who had done a great job at continuing the work his predecessor avatar korra had begun in keeping the peace among the four nations. but towards the end of avatar guang's life, a new threat had begun to emerge, one that ultimately led to his own death. a new form of bloodbending had been created by powerful waterbenders, and these people were given the name "vampyr" from scholars who found stories in ancient texts about similar beings.
ralo's father, airbending master delun, was responsible for the building of the rlung temple, known as the sixth air temple known in existence, although this one was very different from its five predecessors. it was not just a place for young airbenders to come to train in their bending or strengthen their knowledge of their culture; it was to be a sanctuary, a safe haven, for peoples of all nations and bending types. it is to be a place of safety for vulnerable people from these new vampyr bloodbenders, until the united republic council can figure out what to do to rid their people of these threats.
that morning had started like any other, with ralo stood a top one of the high peaks of the temple, doing some yoga poses in an attempt to find inner balance before he started his morning, when he heard the distinct caw of a fire nation messenger hawk, and he lifted an arm to allow the bird to perch. he quickly pulled the message from the hawk's leg, his eyes quickly skimming over the message before they grew wide; with everything going on in the world at the moment, thoughts of the newest avatar being born to the fire nation had not even crossed his mind. but here was a note from the fire lord mandla himself, informing ralo that the fire princess nandi herself was being brought to the temple for both protection and training. she was being escorted by the crown prince philani himself, but philani would not be staying at the temple, and would return to the fire nation capital once princess nandi was settled.
ralo slipped a few coins in the bird's pouch as payment before he gently tossed it off, back into the air. ralo quickly manipulated the air around him to propel himself down the roof and side wall of the temple, gliding for a brief moment before he gracefully landed on the ground beneath him. he pulled paper out of his pocket and scribbled the same message down several times before using his airbending to shoot the messages out in several directions; he knew they'd find their marks, the other councilors, so he quickly made his way for the sanctuary at the far back of the temple, where the council would hold meetings and discussions.
ralo was already seated in his chair at the head of the table, his fingers' nervously tapping the arms of his seat, when the two women entered the sanctuary from the main door. winair, the gather councilor, had burst in at an enhanced speed due to the use of her element, and kasandra, the hunt councilor, had walked in calmly, shaking her head at the other woman's antics. both women took their seats on either side of ralo, curious expressions on their faces as they looked at the scattered papers across the table before them. the water bender was the first to speak, reaching out to gently place her hand on top of her friend's. "ralo, what's going on? your note didn't give a very detailed message, only for us to meet you here right away." his green eyes looked down at their hands and stayed there for a few breaths before looking up to meet kasandra's bright blue eyes; the expression on his face showed no emotion, something ralo had gotten good at, but kasandra could see the strain in his eyes. "yeah, whats up ralo? its not time for one of our normally scheduled meetings." the airbender at his other side spoke up, her own eyes filled with curiosity at what could be so important first thing in the morning.
"the fire lord is sending his daughter here. she will arrive before night falls tonight. the crown prince will be escorting her but will leave once she is settled in. and before you ask, i don't know wat is going on or why he is sending her here. a messenger hawk came to me while i was doing my morning meditation. that is all the information that i have. we must get ready for their arrival. winair, if you can get the gatherers to work on preparing a room for the princess and temporary rooms for the crown prince and a few guards that i'm sure are traveling with them. kasandra, if you can make sure that we have enough food stockpiled to feed everyone and then go to the kitchens to help prepare a nice dinner for the royal family. i will see to it that the warriors ensure all of our borders are secured, and the scouts are prepared to lower the temple down to the mountain when the firebenders arrive. if there are no questions, you're both dismissed."\
the sun was just beginning its descent over the back of the mountains when some of the temple scouts spotted a small procession of komodo rhinos in fire nation colors making their approach up the winding paths of the mountainside. ralo had changed from his casual clothing into a more professional and culturally appropriate airbender garb, his eyes watching the five soldiers that surrounded the two fire nation royals. he, working with several other airbenders, lowered the temple into its space on the mountain, the warriors all standing guard at the entrance in case there was some sort of trick going on. ralo bowed to the prince and princess out of respect, straightening up again before he spoke, his arm gesturing towards the temple. "welcome to rlung temple, your majesties. i am the airbending master ralo, high councilor here at the temple. please, allow my scouts to take your komodo rhino as i show you in; we have dinner prepared for you all, as well as a place to sleep. i guarantee your komodo rhino will be well cared for by our scouts; they have a natural way with animals." the crown prince gave a silent nod of the head to the soldiers behind him, and all seven of the firebenders dismounted.
ralo's eyes were locked on the princess, who couldn't be more than eight years old, but before he could say a word, kasandra made her way to the girl, bending down so that they were eye level as she gave a sweet smile; kasandra always did seem to have a way with children, and her energy was normally quite calming as well. "well hello there. you must be princess nandi. my name is councilor kasandra. i notice you have something squirming under your robe there, can i see what it is?" the young girl let out a small giggle and a devious smile as she opened her cloak, and a little white and pink face poked through. "this is ryu. he's my animal companion, and someday he'll be my mount; when he's bigger." the young girl began excitedly telling kasandra all about the little dragon as the pair walked into the temple, and crown prince philani walked a few paces behind with master ralo, his voice very low as he began to speak, ensuring only the man at his side would hear his words. "i'm sure you're wondering why we've brought her here, to you. only a few fire sages remain, after their betrayal of avatar roku and avatar aang during the hundred years war, but several months ago they came to my father and informed him that nandi is the next avatar. it makes sense in the cycle; roku was fire, aang was air, korra was water, guang was earth. the next avatar would be a firebender. the fire sages informed us of her identity so young because of the dangers our world is facing from the vampyr threat; they believe her training needed to begin sooner than normal. a firebender's first step in avatar training is mastering airbending, and so, my father and i decided to entrust that training to you, master ralo."
