The Kin of the Wildflower was founded in the heart of the bayou by a single molly with high ambitions. They value family above all else, and view the Clan as a single extended family. This shows in how leadership is chosen. Instead of having a deputy that takes over for the leader, the leader is always AFAB, and their firstborn AFAB kit is the heir, who will take over for them. When there is no heir, or the heir is too young to perform their duties, a regent is chosen to perform the heir's duties until the heir is old enough. Forbidden relationships are a bit different in the Kin than in other Clans. While relationships that bear kits aren't forbidden, emotional attachments are. It's not uncommon for a cat from the Kin to solicit outsiders for the purposes of kitmaking in order to keep bloodlines clean. The Kin believe in reincarnation. Most cats will reincarnate multiple times. Only the cats who make a major mark upon history will live in the afterlife. Souls waiting to be reincarnated can be given to a living cat in order to grant them extra lives. Could I request this cat or another dilute tortie/calico for my founder please?

The midday sun shined down brightly as Aster stalked through the shadows, casting strange patterns through the leaves of the trees. The grey, cream, and white cat enjoyed the feeling of cool mud on her paws, contrasting with the sweltering summer heat. She kept her eyes open for predators - far from the water, she had little to worry about from alligators, but the snakes would certainly be out and about right now and their venom could easily take out a cat.
Aster had never explored this section of the bayou before. She was out searching for cats to recruit into her new Clan, and had exhausted all familiar territory. What she found wasn't a cat, but a massive hollowed out shell of charcoal. Once a tree, it must have been struck by lightning and burned up. Oddly, the surrounding trees were unmarred, and as Aster drew closer to the lightning-struck tree she began hearing whispers, too quiet to make out the words. Intrigued, the molly bounded up to the burnt tree and entered the hollow. Sleep, she heard, and so she curled up in the center and closed her eyes.
When she awoke, Aster saw only blackness. The darkness began to shift, and Aster realized that she was surrounded by shadowy feline figures. The figures spoke, both many voices and one at the same time.
"We are the shades, souls waiting to be born again. Welcome to the Void."
Aster stared in awe at the multitude of shades surrounding her. Slowly, she could pick out the differences in appearances among them. There were cats of all ages, from kits to elders. Longhairs and shorthairs too. "What do you want from me?"
"We think your goals are admirable, and would like to offer our assistance. First, we'd like to offer the gift of nine lives. Please stand still." Eight shades stepped out of the crowd. One kept walking forwards until it touched Aster, and then it was absorbed into her. Memories flooded into her, a stinging pain in the paw followed by an intense pain radiating throughought her body that only ended with death.
"A snake bite?" she choked out. No answer came as the second shade, a tiny kit, entered into Aster. Memories of playing in the shallows of the water, the sudden pain of being snapped up in an alligator's jaws, and then nothingness. Aster realized that with each life she recieved, she was also going to recieve the memory of that shade's death. She gritted her teeth and prepared for the worst.
A young cat trapped in a hunting trap who slowly starved to death. A queen who gave birth to a healthy litter of kits, only for her to grow sicker and sicker in the days following the birth. An elder who waded too deep, couldn't swim his way out and drowned. Greencough. A stomach lump that grew over the moons and made the cat too sick to move. Aster braced herself for the final death, but when the final shade entered her there were no memories at all. They must have died in their sleep, she realized.
"Aster," the shades began, "as the first leader we bestow upon you the name Astershade, in honor of your connection to the Void. We are you to serve you, you may request of us what you wish.
"I want a follower," Astershade replied. "You know what? Make it a handsome tom. Someone I can produce an heir with." The world around her began to fade, and the newly-crowned leader awoke. The sun hung low in the sky, half a day had passed in her sleep. Astershade got up with a stretch, and decided to set about marking new borders to include the lightning tree.

{proof of winning Bunnicula/Fang/Spiderfang, Sparrowdusk/Bird/Sparrowflight, Meihua/Birchheart, and Socks/Bluefoot}
The further Snake got from his old clowder, the better. He didn't know what they'd do to him if they found him, and he didn't want to know. His journey had led him to the bayou, where the dangers of the predators scared him far less than his past. It was there that he'd met the wandering loner Fang, who'd been seeking a travelling companion after being dumped by his boyfriend for cheating. Snake couldn't afford to be picky, and as annoying as the young tom could be he was still good company.
"What are you running from anyways," Fang asked during one early morning hunt. "I've told you about the break-up and the rejection, but you've said barely a peep about yourself."
"I don't-" Snake stammered, and then collected himself. "You wouldn't understand. Please ask about anything but that." He didn't particularly feel like talking about himself, but he felt Fang was expecting something juicy out of him. To his surprise though, the black-and-white tom went silent. "I said you can ask abou-"
"No, I get it," Fang interrupted. "You don't want to talk about it. I just need to know, am I in any danger from this mysterious past of yours?"
The bronze tom looked straight at him. "No." He then added, "Thanks for understanding."
They walked in silence, eyes and ears alert for prey. A dark shape appeared in Snake's peripheral vision, then disappeared. Another one - or perhaps the same one - appeared in front of the duo. The dark, translucent shape of a cat. Unsure what to make of the situation, Snake started to back away, but he saw Fang step forward, seemingly transfixed. The shadowy figure darted forward, and Fang followed it.
"Fang, what the fuck are you doing?!" Concerned for his friend, Snake reluctantly gave chase. The black apparition took them through the bayou, over a scent border. Oh don't let us get in trouble for trespassing, the Abyssinian pleaded mentally as the two followed this strange being. It finally took them through a thicket of undergrowth into a clearing and disappeared. There, a longhaired dilute tortie-and-white molly sat elegantly on a flat boulder.
"I've been waiting for you. Welcome to the Kin of the Wildflower."
---
The Kin of the Wildflower was growing nicely with the two toms the shades had guided to Astershade. Copperpool (formerly Snake) was a rather handsome tom, and he and Astershade were getting on quite well. Spiderfang (formerly Fang) on the other hand, well Astershade kept finding him wandering off for some reason. Astershade was quite pleased with the rate of the Kin's growth.
Today, Astershade went out hunting alone, far past the borders. As much as she desired a large Clan, she also valued her alone time. She'd caught nothing yet, but her mood was still high.
While walking through the trees, she spotted a lynx point sunning herself on a fallen log. She had some of the soft look of a kittypet, but it was mixed with the rough look of a loner. Astershade guessed that this cat had been living on her own for some time now. As she got closer and got a whiff of the stranger's scent, she realized that some of the plumpness wasn't just from kittypet softness - this molly was pregnant.
Astershade raised her tail in greeting. "Hello! The weather is lovely today, isn't it?"
"It sure is," the queen replied. Then, she added, "I haven't seen another cat around these parts in ages. Where are you from?"
Astershade walked over and jumped up on the log to join her. "I'm from down south, I lead a small group of cats called the Kin of the Wildflower."
"Must be nice to have company," the queen sighed wistfully.
"It's a challenge, being in charge, and sometimes I need to take some time alone. But it is nice, yes. My name's Astershade, by the way. I don't think you told me yours yet?"
"I'm Meihua." The name was incredibly strange to Astershade. "I used to be a kittypet, but you probably guessed that already."
"I did," admitted Astershade. "You're not one anymore though. What brings you into the wilderness here?"
"It's not a happy story." Meihua sat up straight and looked at the sky. "I used to have everything. I had a mate - Guiying - and we lived with our owner in a wonderful house. He took good care of us." She took a deep breath, steeling herself for the next statement. "Our home caught on fire one night. Our owner was lost to the flames, and Guiying suffered burns before the two of us could escape. We spent a few days in the wild together, but he succumbed to his injuries and passed too."
Astershade pressed herself against Meihua's side comfortingly. "I'm so sorry. You must be strong to be able to care for yourself out in the wild while you're expecting kits."
"I won't be able to do it forever though. For now, my belly is small. But what about when my belly is large, or when the kits are born? You said you lead the Kin, would you mind if I joined? I don't want to be a burden."
"Of course you wouldn't be a burden!" Astershade exclaimed. "Queens and kits are the most important part of any Clan! You and your kits will be well-fed and protected, don't you worry!"
"Thank you so much!" Meihua purred. "My kits mean everything to me. The one good thing that's come out of losing my home is that I get to keep them." At Astershade's puzzled expression, she added, "When kittypet kits get old enough, their owner will send them off to different houses."
"Well I'm glad something good could come out of your situation. Oh, and if you're going to join the Kin, you'll need a proper name." Astershade looked the queen up and down. She had pale fur with darker stripes, just like how a birch tree had light bark with darker stripes. "Birchheart will be your new name, if you accept it."
"Of course!"
And so the two mollies made their way to the Kin camp, chatting about Clans and kittens the whole way there.
---
Who knew border patrols would be so boring? Spiderfang expected there to be more than just walking along the border lines, checking to make sure nobody's crossed. More fighting, maybe, or at least some hunting. The fact that Copperpool and Astershade were cheerfully making small talk with each other the whole time just made things worse. Spiderfang wished he was back in camp with Birchheart, at least she always had something interesting to say.
Astershade halted the patrol, snapping Spiderfang back into reality. He then noticed what the other two had probably noticed already - the scents of two strange cats. Silently, the patrol swerved away from the border to follow the scent tracks. As they got closer to intruders, he could hear the sounds of rustling leaves and churning mud.
"Halt! Intruders!" Astershade shouted as the patrol burst out of the undergrowth. Spiderfang spied the two intruders, a silver tom and a gray and white molly, covered in mud and looking at the Kin leader with plants dangling from their mouths and shame in their eyes.
The molly dropped her haul to the marshy ground. "I'm sorry, this is all my fault. I didn't think you'd miss a few plants.
Astershade's hackles began to fall. "You're just taking plants? What would you possibly need those for."
"This is pennywort. If you chew up the root and put the pulp on scratches, it helps them heal better." The molly gestured to the round-leaved plants she and her companion had been digging up. "This is the one of the best patches I've ever found, but last time I was here there wasn't a border around it."
"My name's Squirrel," her companion said after gently placing his bundle of pennywort. "This is Bird. She helped me when I was injured, and I was just trying to repay her." Looking closer, Spiderfang could see places where patches of fur were just starting to grow back.
Astershade sat down and curled her tail around her paws, clearly thinking about something. "My name's Astershade. I'm the leader of the Kin of the Wildflower. These two toms are Copperpool and Spiderfang."
"If I may be so bold, I'd like to join your group. I've lived the loner's life for long enough. If you let me join, I can treat your sick and injured for you."
Astershade's face was unreadable. "And Squirrel? What about you?"
"I'll join if you'll have me. Or I'll leave quietly. It's your call." The silver longhair was quite dignified in his response.
The calico leader to a moment to consider things. "You both shall join. Bird, your new name shall be Sparrowflight. Squirrel, your new name is Squirrelwhiskers. Sparrowflight, we have a queen due in a couple moons. I want Spiderfang to join you in searching for any herbs to make her kitting go easier. Squirrelwhiskers, Copperpool and I will help you to gather the pennywort and any other herbs of Sparrowflight's and take them back to camp so we may prepare a den for her. Have I made myself clear?" Astershade's orders were met with nods, and the five cats split into two groups.
As the tails of the other three disappeared into the undergrowth, Spiderfang turned his attention to Sparrowflight. The older molly was cleaning the mud off of herself, and Spiderfang noted that underneath all the gunk she was rather pretty. Much older than he usually went for, but that didn't bother him.
"So, kitting herbs. What would those be?"
Finished with her grooming, Sparrowflight replied, "Well, ragwort's the main one. It helps with the actual act of kitting. Willow bark is helpful too, it reduces the pain. And when all else fails, nothing beats a good stick to bite down on. Then, when the kits are born, fennel is good to help keep the queen's milk supply up. Do you know what all those look like?" She began walking and gestured for Spiderfang to follow.
"I'm not familiar with fennel, but I know what ragwort and willow trees look like," he replied.
"Fennel has feathery leaves, it's pretty unmistakable. The smell is rather unique too."
Spiderfang walked a little faster until he was walking side-by-side with Sparrowflight. "Do you have a lot of experience with kitting?"
She looked at him with a friendly flick of her ears. "It's one of the more common things I deal with, along with whitecough and minor wounds."
"Did you ever have a family?" he asked. "Don't suppose you ever had a mate?"
She chuckled. "Never had an interest in taking a mate, and if you're implying what I think you're implying then I'm flattered but the answer is no." More seriously, she added, "My parents and I used to clash a lot over my choice to learn to heal cats instead of hunt and fight. I had a littermate, but he died when we were little. What about you, any family of yours?"
Spiderfang shrugged. "I'm from a pretty big litter. I always felt like I was kinda ignored, you know? So I set off on my own as soon as I was old enough."
After that, the two searched in silence for a while for the herbs for Birchheart's kitting.
---
Socks stumbled through the undergrowth, unaccustomed to the lack of smooth pavement beneath her feet. Scared and alone, she had no choice but to put as much distance between her and twolegplace as possible, hoping that her mate Duchess found her way out safely too.
Neither used to the darkness with the trees blotting out the moonlight, nor listening for nearby cats, Socks nearly jumped out of her pelt when she heard a cat's voice.
"You weren't planning to cross our border now, were you?" Socks glimpsed a large calico scowling at her.
Only just now smelling the border a mere tail-length in front of her, Socks flattened her ears in shame. "I'm sorry, I wasn't paying attention." The blue tabby began making her way parallel to the border when she heard a familiar voice.
"Socks? Is that you?"
"Snake! It's been moons! I thought for sure they'd have caught you by now," Socks looked closer and saw that the the calico was accompanied by her old acquaintance.
"My name's Copperpool now." To the calico, he said, "Astershade, Socks and I know each other from way back. Why not invite her to join?"
Astershade chuckled. "Why not? We need more cats after all."
Copperpool stepped forward and looked around. "You're not here without Duchess are you? She's not... you know?"
"I- I don't think so? We snuck out together, but we were followed so we split up and I don't know where she went or if she's even alive and-"
Suddenly Socks was enveloped in a purring mass of fur. "Shhhh. You're safe now, and I'll tell the Clan to keep an eye out for Duchess. I'll ask the ancestors about her whereabouts too, I'm sure they'll be able to help," Astershade promised.
Astershade, Copperpool, Spiderfang, Squirrelwhiskers, and Bluefoot patrol the borders Astershade, Copperpool, Spiderfang, Squirrelwhiskers, and Bluefoot go hunting Sparrowflight and Spiderfang search for willow bark, sticks, fennel, and ragwort 2 moons until Birchheart kits Astershade requests an oriental shorthair warrior from the shades

{Proof of getting Pansyclaw/Blackclaw and Unnamed/Antstripe: here}
Alone, Sparrowflight paced in camp as moonlight flooded the clearing. Insomnia had left her tossing and turning in her nest until she finally gave up and left the medicine den.
Movement in the shadows caught her eye, and Sparrowflight stopped in her tracks. A shadowy feline form stepped towards her, kit-sized and achingly familiar. Though this creature was featureless, Sparrowflight recognized it instantly.
"Mouse!" she shout-whispered, careful not to wake her Clanmates. The shade was her littermate, who had died when they were both kits. "I can't believe it's you!"
The shade said nothing, simply turned around and, with a flick of his tail, gestured for her to follow. Sparrowflight wordlessly obeyed, and let Mouse lead her through the trees out to the edge of Kin territory. Then Mouse stepped into the shadow of a tree, and disappeared. Shocked, and momentarily doubting her sanity, Sparrowflight leapt backwards. But taking a second look at the tree now, she realized it was just a hollow shell of charcoal, likely struck by lightning sometime in the past. She slowly approached the tree, and stepped into the hollow. Drowsiness overcame her, and she couldn't fight the urge to curl up and go to sleep.
When she opened her eyes, she wasn't sure she'd opened them at all, for all she could see was blackness. But then she spotted motion in the darkness, and realized she was surrounded by hundreds of shadowy cats just like her brother. Some she recognized as former patients. Others felt familiar too, though Sparrowflight had no idea why.
"We are the shades, souls waiting to be reborn." The shades all spoke as one. "Sparrowflight, you've been the medicine cat of the Kin of the Wildflower for a moon now. Until now, we have only spoken with Astershade. While she has performed admirably in her role, we need you to perform a different role for us. We need a cat among the living to serve as our voice. While Astershade conveys the needs of the living to us, you must convey the needs of the dead to the living. Do you understand?"
"I do."
"We all thank you. Tell your Clan that what they seek is to the North. You may return to your Clan now, but we ask that you return to us ever half moon so we may speak again."
---
Copperpool stopped at the border, and glanced back at his patrol. "Are you two ready? I don't know what kind of dangers there'll be outside of the territory. Alligators, eagles, twolegs, and more. If you need assistance, don't hesitate to call out." Squirrelwhiskers nodded in acknowledgement. The young tom had proven to an excellent tracker, so Astershade had selected him to join the patrol to search for Duchess. Bluefoot, on the other paw, was kneading the ground nervously. The older molly had insisted on joining the search for her mate, clinging to the hope that she was still alive.
"I'm ready," Bluefoot replied. "I'll stay in earshot, just in case. But you know me, I can handle myself in a fight."
"I'm ready too!" Squirrelwhiskers exclaimed.
Copperpool nodded, and the three cats split up, noses to the ground. The shades had given a general direction for Duchess's location, but were unable to give an exact location or confirm her fate. So to the north they went, on what felt like a wild goose chase.
Time flew by. The sun fell from its perch high in the sky and dipped below the horizon, only the tiniest bit of light escaping through. Copperpool didn't know how far the patrol had strayed from Kin territory.
"I've caught a scent!" Squirrelwhiskers cried out from the west. Copperpool heard the sounds of a cat trampling through the undergrowth, and knew it had to be Bluefoot coming to help investigate. Copperpool headed over to Squirrelwhiskers as well, and it wasn't long before the three patrol members were reunited.
"Three cats passed through here together. Bluefoot, do you recognize any of them?" Squirrelwhiskers asked.
Relief flooded her voice as she said, "Yes! Duchess was here! I don't recognize the other two." Quickly, she added, "That's a good thing. I'd recognize the guards who followed us, so the two strangers are likely allies. We should still hurry though, the scent is relatively fresh and if we continue on during the night we should be able to catch them before sunrise."
"That's not a bad idea. If anyone gets hungry or tired though, let me know. Duchess is safe, or at least she was. If we need to take a break, we'll take a break." Copperpool gestured for Squirrelwhiskers to lead the way, and the Abyssinian ended up walking side by side with his old clowdermate.
"We haven't had the chance to talk about our time in Les Délaissés. I think-"
Copperpool shushed Bluefoot. "I haven't said a word about it to anyone in the Kin, and I want to keep it that way," he said, gesturing to Squirrelwhiskers, who thankfully showed no signs of having heard what she said.
Bluefoot narrowed her eyes. "So you're going to pretend everything we did - everything you did - never happened," she whispered harshly. Then, her eyes lit up in understanding. "Oh. Oh! I get it now. I've seen the way you look at Astershade. You're crushing hard on her, and you don't think she'd like the truth!"
"It's not just that," he admitted. "Never mind liking me back, would she even want me in her Clan any more?"
"I'm sure if you told her the full story-"
"Any reason you two are whispering back there?" Squirrelwhiskers called back.
"Just reminiscing about the past, didn't want to distract you. Sorry!" Bluefoot replied. The three spent the rest of the walk in silence.
---
"Wake up! Someone's coming!" Blackclaw's frantic voice broke Duchess out of her restless dreams. Adrenaline coursed through her veins as she leapt to her feet, ready to fight or flee.
"What do they look like?" Duchess called up. Beside her, Ant was rousing from their slumber.
From her perch high in a tree, Blackclaw replied, "A silver tabby, a dark red tabby, and a blue tabby. Are those your pursuers from before?"
The oriental molly shook her head. "No, they aren't." Then, a crazy thought popped into her head. "How many toes does the blue one have on their front right paw?"
"Have you lost your mind?" Ant scoffed. "What makes you think she can see that from here?"
The wind changed, sending the newcomers's scents blowing straight towards Duchess. She breathed in the familiar scent mingled with the new. "Socks!" she called out as she ran to reunite with her lover.
"Duchess!" Socks burst through the undergrowth, purring like crazy, and ran to Duchess to rub her cheeks against hers. "I'm so glad you're alive!"
"I thought I'd never see you again!" The two mollies wrapped themselves around each other, as if the other might drift away without the other there to anchor her. "Where did you go after we got separated?"
"I joined a Clan - the Kin of the Wildflower. My name is Bluefoot now. You remember Snake?" Duchess nodded. "He joined too, and he came with me looking for you. His name is Copperpool now. Squirrelwhiskers came with us too. What about you? I see there's a couple of other cats here with you too."
"I managed to lose the guards chasing me, and then I ran into Blackclaw and Ant. We've been travelling together for a couple days now." Movement in the undergrowth drew Duchess's gaze, and she saw the two Kin cats - Copperpool and Squirrelwhiskers - emerge.
Blackclaw cleared her throat. "Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Blackclaw, I used to be a Clan cat before my Clan was destroyed." She gestured to Ant, indicating it was their turn to speak.
"My name's Ant. Blackclaw's stories of Clan life made me want to join a Clan, and the two of us have been looking for a Clan to join." They dipped their head respectfully towards the Kin patrol.
"It sounds like you were only looking for Duchess, but we'd greatly appreciate it if you could take us into your Clan. We've both been searching for a Clan to join, and we hope you'll have us," Blackclaw said.
Copperpool stepped forward. "Our leader, Astershade has the final say." Blackclaw made a funny face when he said that name. "But I'm sure she'd be happy to have more strong warriors."
"Let's get going," Bluefoot said. "We should catch a bite to eat on the way home too."
Everyone mewed in agreement, and the group of six began the journey south.
---
"Astershade, you wanted to see me?" Copperpool's voice came from the den entrance.
"Yes, please come in," Astershade replied.
The handsome tom entered the den and sat in front of his leader. "Nothing bad I hope?"
"No, no, everything's going quite well," Astershade purred. "Bluefoot and Anhingafeather are happy to be reunited, they're even talking about having kits now. Blackclaw and Antstripe are both settling in nicely. Thanks to you and your patrol, we have three strong new warriors and possibly even a litter on the way."
Copperpool looked away. "It was nothing, really."
Astershade shook her head. "No, you took the initiative to set up the patrol and pick out the cats best suited to it. That's not 'nothing'." She paused for a moment. "I've been thinking about what will happen to this Clan if I pass away without producing an heir. Will it be torn apart in a power struggle? So I've decided to choose a regent to take over if I die prematurely. I'd like you, Copperpool, to be my regent."
Copperpool looked back at Astershade. "I'd be honored, but you should know something about me, what I did before joining the Kin. I-"
"Nonsense! Nothing you could have done before coming here would change my opinion of you. I trust you!"
