BACKGROUND once regarded as a powerful clan living in middle of a forest that had once burned down, smokeclan is familiar with hardships. founded by shadestar, a former loner, smokeclan grew to unprecedented numbers. however, a string of murders conducted by one of smokeclan's own warriors, tidegaze, led to seasons of fear as the clan continued to grow. while outsiders would regard smokeclan as a success for many moons, those within the clan struggled to survive against the elements. whereas smokeclan thought they had a strong faith in starclan and believed that they, surely, could not be steered wrong, this faith was shaken forever when tidegaze's apprentice at the time, blizzardslash, murdered shadestar. following shadestar's death, her son was named leader and smokeclan came together under spiderstar, who swore that he would bring an end to the murders. at last, spiderstar discovered his mother's murderer when tidegaze attempted a coup to overthrow spiderstar and take leadership of the clan from the younger tom. however, tidegaze's control over the clan did not last long as the loyal smokeclan cats rose up behind spiderstar when he challenged tidegaze once more. the resulting battle divided smokeclan and, fortunately for young spiderstar, he and his followers managed to kill tidegaze along with many of the other rebels. those who were not killed in the battle were driven out of smokeclan territory, never to be seen again. when it seemed that smokeclan might have finally reached a point where they could be at peace, however, spiderstar's sanity began to slip. whereas he once had a purpose, his trust in his own clan began to falter and he constantly looked over his shoulder for signs of other traitors. despite advice from his father, hailstorm, his sister, icecloud, and from his deputy, dustmask, spiderstar continued to slip. once a promising and skilled young warrior became paranoid as he struggled with the responsibility of following in the steps of his mother, shadestar. in recent moons, spiderstar was noted as a recluse, speaking to few and trusting even fewer. at last, it reached a point when it seemed that spiderstar might lose support from his most trusted warriors. just when it seemed that matters might come to a head, however, smokeclan's territory was engulfed with flame when a storm hit, lighting striking the forest. chaos followed the fire, as large as the legendary fire that spread through smokeclan's forest seasons before shadestar started the clan. the fire spread rapidly, so quickly that there was no time to prepare. in the ensuing panic, smokeclan split into different groups. several cats died in the fire, include spiderstar's father, hailstorm, and smokeclan's beloved medicine cat, wolfsong, along with others. following the fire, spiderstar made it his mission to find his clan again, to rebuild smokeclan as his mother had in the past, and to become the leader he hadn't been able to be. once more, spiderstar had a mission for himself: to bring smokeclan to their former glory by reuniting his family. TERRITORY
smokeclan resides in the heart of a dense forest. the forest is broken by several winding streams that offer the chance to swim or fish. though the forest was once healthy and dense with evergreen trees, the forest has been damaged as a result of the recent fire. when shadestar founded smokeclan originally, she created in the camp at the heart of the original fire, where starclan marked as a spot blessed by making the forest their home. in following with tradition, spiderstar found where the recent fire began, where the forest was most blackened by ash, and reinstated a new camp. the new smokeclan camp is nestled at the eastern edge of their territory between two small streams to mark the camp boundaries. the leader's den is between two large boulders that created a gap between them, and the smokeclan leader climbs the tree over the boulders to address the clan. smokeclan warriors prefer to sleep outside for most of the year, but make dens in other small rock croppings and under bushes in winter. the apprentices also sleep outside near a tree trunk in summer and spring, and retreat to bushes when the weather turns cold. the nursery, elders' dens, and medicine cats' den are all made by bringing together ferns, fallen branches, and brambles to construct fortified and warm dens at all times. smokeclan was named originally for the way the ash hung in the air, appearing like smoke at night when the moonlight filtered through the trees. as a result of the most recent fire, this aspect of smokeclan territory is all the more prominent.
ATTRIBUTES noted for resilience and the ability to come together, smokeclan cats are particularly prideful, but also skittish. they are a group of cats who have known hardship and danger from the beginning, and want to stay away from it as much as possible. as such, they tend to remain isolationist and as far away from other clans as possible. as a group, they like to stick together and are noted to be loyal, but also put themselves first. they know betrayal well and fear that it will happen again. a cat who is not loyal to the clan first and foremost is not a cat that belongs in smokeclan. though medicine cats may take mates, romances with other clans is seen as a betrayal of smokeclan, and mothers may be driven out if discovered. though not plagued with enemies, smokeclan does not make alliances easily. in the case they do find allies, it is because of a common goal and a foundation of trust. even still, it is rare that smokeclan would stick its nose into another clan's problems, and are more than likely to remain entirely neutral in cases of conflict, blocking off all borders and going into hiding until it has passed. only for the closest of allies would smokeclan venture beyond their boundaries to give aid, but their skittish nature makes them very wary, waiting to be careful in order to protect smokeclan above all else. smokeclan cats are notoriously stealthy, aided by the thickness of the forest. adept at climbing and moving between trees, smokeclan warriors have developed a system of communication that does not require any speaking. quick to flee and rarely speaking their minds, smokeclan cats want to be considered elusive and unknowable to outsiders. NOTES this is my clan from advanced scribes. bringing spiderstar, breezefeather, shadowcall, talonsight, and stormbreeze (stormbreeze is currently a queen, due in 1m). there will be a list of cats that i wish to be found on patrols (will provide in my next post for patrols) from the advanced scribes version of smokeclan. i would like spiderstar to remain as leader.

over the course of his life, spiderstar had lost so much, had suffered so much pain. for the longest time, he thought that nothing could be worse than when he discovered his mother's body, and felt hr fur grow cold as the hours passed. shadestar had been there, always, and then she was gone and he never had the chance to say goodbye. there was the pain of suffering the loss of his first life. the helpless suffering when tidegaze took over smokeclan and spiderstar was left to watch as his own warriors were murdered before his eyes. the same cats who had chanted his name to the skies and called him their leader, trusting him to guide their lives. and he had been forced to watch them die, nothing he could do to stop it. maybe it was because he was too young. he had been too young, then, just barely been made a warrior and he was in charge of the entire clan, all of their lives dependent on each and every choice he made. and still, he kept making the wrong choices, so it seemed, the choices that led them all into the vast void of misery, no end in sight. even then, when there was only everything left to lose, they stood with him against tidegaze and tidegaze's followers. and, by some miracle, they had won. the loyal smokeclan cats won, they claimed victory and, after that, it should have been a time of peace and prosperity. when they stood together, so strong and firm, who could hurt them? his leadership, spiderstar was convinced, was cursed. he didn't know where he had gone so wrong, what he must have done to bring the wrath of their ancestors down upon the fragile clan. he tried - by starclan he tried so hard. but to what end? no one knew that the storm was coming. no one would have thought that it would be their downfall. thunderstorms: they happened and life continued. but there had been a lightning flash, so vibrant that it lit up the entire forest, as far as spiderstar could tell. but it was more than just a wayward streak of light crashing down from the sky. for it brought fire with it, a blaze that consumed the home he had loved so dearly and he had done his best to protect the forest to no end. he would have stayed right there in the middle of the smokeclan camp, basking in the thick smoke and torrent of rain, just to watch it all burn. and he would have burned right with it, if breezefeather hadn't come to him and talked him down from the smoke ledge. when his paws hit the ground, he took off running. the camp had been divided in half, chaos enveloping them all. there had been no time to call out orders, and spiderstar doubted that he would have been heard over the thunder. he had only been able to hope that his clan would make it out alive. he prayed that any ancestor might be listening to his pleas for help, that maybe his mother might be listening and take pity on her son and the clan she spent her life building up. surely, spiderstar thought as he fled, that shadestar wouldn't allow for them all to die and for the forest to burn completely. when he was rendered powerless, left to flee for his life with no idea of where his siblings were, where his father was, were his friends were, spiderstar prayed to shadestar that she would let them live. for a long time, spiderstar had crouched in the bushes on the far end of smokeclan territory with breezefeather and shadowcall, who had managed to rush out with them. but, after the blaze died down, they returned to the camp. or, rather, they returned to what had once been the camp, where horrors faced them. it was impossible to believe that they all might have made it out alive, after all, though spiderstar never could have prepared himself for the sight of bodies stuck in dens, where the cats must have done everything possible to try and claw their way out, but the smoke had been so thick, the flames so hot. he found his close friends, his own father, dead. for the longest time, he crouched over hailstorm's body and tried to remember what it was like to see hailstorm smile, what his voice had sounded like. spiderstar found that he couldn't remember, and his body wracked with violent sobs until his head swam. and there were others. earthenstorm, who had always been a force of optimism and energy in the camp. snowtail, thunderheart, and their newborn kits, several of the apprentices stuck from where the apprentices' den had collapsed into itself, others huddled together from where they had tried to keep one another safe until the end. and how spiderstar hoped that the end had been quick for them. breezefeather found wolfsong first, and the tom's wails sounded as though they would make the entire forest tremble. the tabby medicine cat had not managed to get out of the den he and breezefeather had shared for seasons. spiderstar and shadowcall gave the medicine cat the time to mourn his mentor in private as, together, they scouted the area surrounding the camp. not far from camp, they found talonsight and stormbreeze. talonsight's white pelt had been stained gray, and stormbreeze had curled protectively around her swollen stomach, protective over her unborn kits. it was only later that the small group sat vigil for all of their clanmates, praying that the others were out there somewhere, and that they might find them soon. spiderstar lifted his nose to the sky, where smoke hung suspended in the bitter air, while breezefeather sobbed into shadowcall's shoulder. stormbreeze dozed off midway through the night, and spiderstar caught glimpses of talonsight's white fur as he circled the perimeter of the clan's former camp, on the watch for any of their other friends, or any predators that might look to take advantage of the clan cats in their weakened states. more than once, spiderstar mistook the young warrior for hailstorm, and his chest tightened each time, as though he was seeing the ghost of the strongest cat he had ever known. "shadestar," spiderstar whispered to the stars, after breezefeather had quieted and slumped down beside stormbreeze, who groomed gently between his ears to try and soothe him. "bring them back." as he stared around at the clearing, he knew there was much to be done. he thought of icecloud, crowflame, cloudstorm, and nightshade - his remaining family uncounted for. he thought dustmask, his deputy of one of his dearest friends, of cinderleaf and mothwhisker, and the numerous apprentices and kits. to his father's spirit, who he saw in a bright white star above the camp, he whispered, "help them. bring them home." there was no answer written so far up in the stars, so high above his head, so far out of spiderstar's reach, but he prayed that his friends and family who had gone too soon would be listening and would send him the assistance he would need to rebuild smokeclan.
the small group waited in the old camp for as long as they could, with the hopes that one of their friends would return to the ashes of their former home, but it became increasingly clear that their camp was too far gone to serve as their home any longer, not when the ash coated their paws and hung in the air, so thickly that it was hard to breathe. especially with stormbreeze's kits due within a matter of moons. but it was no use to deny that they were all waiting, waiting, endlessly waiting for one of their clanmates to appear. smokeclan had survived for season, built on the idea that they were better as a clan, as a unified family, then they were apart. so many of them, too many, in fact, were refugees from clans that had fallen before them. but smokeclan had stood firm, for the most part, through hardships that might have knocked another clan to its heels. they saw rebellion, death, murder, the fall of shadestar and the rise of spiderstar. spiderstar, who climbed the smoke rock to look down upon the four cats who remained before him. shadowcall, one of smokeclan's first warriors, strong and resilient. breezefeather, who came to smokeclan as a lost apprentice, but found his place as a medicine cat under wolfsong's guidance, who had been lost to his emotions more than once, but was a gifted medicine cat and a great friend. stormbreeze, who came to smokeclan injured after her past clan leader exiled her, left her for dead, but who found courage to stand up to the same cat who threatened her life to protect her new home. and talonsight, the son of rabbitpounce, a devouted mother and dedicated warrior, and tidegaze, the tyrant who caused so much pain in smokeclan over the moons. up on the smoke rock, spiderstar addressed them: "smokeclan," he began, the single world a breathless exhale, as if it drained all of his energy to utter that alone. but her persisted, shaking out his pelt and planting his forepaws on the stone beneath him. down in the clearing, breezefeather and stormbreeze leaned against one another for support, talonsight gazed up at spiderstar, his ears angled towards where the entrance to the camp once stood, and shadowcall sat further back, assessing it all, taking in the sights and continuing to guard the camp. "we have no reason to think that those unaccounted for will not return to us. we are a family, have always been a family. though many members of our family have passed on and have joined the ranks of starclan, we should not let our grief bury us under the rumble of our home." spiderstar paused long enough to draw in a deep breath, fighting back a cough at the ash that tickled the back of his throat. "but my mother built this clan from just ashes when she founded smokeclan, through the guidance of starclan. and the fact that we are still alive, that the five of us are together, shows that starclan is still with us and wants us to thrive." he noticed that breezefeather was beginning to sit up a little straighter, and talonsight tipped his chin up towards the sky, holding his head higher than before. stormbreeze wrapped her tail around her stomach, and shadowcall's eyes flashed. "we were presented with another challenge. so what? what next? we're still here, what else can be thrown our way that we can't handle? we're still here, we're still alive, and we're still smokeclan. what can stand in our way? we'll find the others and reunite stronger than ever before. we'll rise from these ashes, and we'll be better than ever before. we are smokeclan, and we always will be smokeclan. let's get the rest of our family back, and never let ourselves be torn again." there was no cresting crescendo of cheers, no echo of voices to rattle the stars themselves, no pounding of paws to shake the burned forest to its knees, but spiderstar's sharp blue eyes cut across his friends and clanmates, and felt his own determination reflected back at him, and he felt full. for the first time in a long time, since he had just been a young warrior, spiderstar felt able to chew the world and swallow it whole. nothing would stand in their way, not anymore. no more traitors, no more murders, no more letting themselves be overwhelmed by some power beyond them. it was time for smokeclan to take charge and show the world what they were here to do.
still, there was a lot of work to be done. all of their prey had been lost, most of their camp's defenses and dens were burned into nothing. the only true solace was that breezefeather managed to find a small stack of herbs that had been stashed away and had survived being damaged by the fire and smoke. it was the time for taking precautionary measures, from carrying moss across the forest to a clean stream to gather water, to seek out prey that was hiding from the flames, and then beginning to burrow away in preparation for the coming leafbare. not to mention that stormbreeze's kits would be due in time, and there was no protected space to keep the queen and her newborn kits. while the rest of them would managed to find cover, it would be better if the camp had some protected space for stormbreeze. which meant that while breezefeather was out looking for any herbs, and spiderstar and talonsight went hunting, shadowcall took it upon herself to track down any supplies she could find to build a makeshift nursery. stormbreeze helped shadowcall as much as she could, helping drag brambles across the ashen ground, joining shadowcall to pick through the territory not too far from camp, and weaving together leaves, branches, and whatever else they managed to salvage to create, at the very least, the illusion of protection from the elements. it was only when stormbreeze was panting, her sides heaving, that shadowcall shot the other molly a pointed glance. "i think it's time you take a little rest," she said, leveling her stare when stormbreeze flicked her ears dismissively at first. "i'm serious. you probably won't want breezefeather nagging you when he gets back to see that you wore yourself out. and i don't want him coming to me about letting you work yourself too hard." that managed to pull a laugh from stormbreeze, who flashed her a crooked smile. "i guess you've got a good point. for both of our sakes." she sat and wrapped her tail neatly around her paws and let shadowcall work in silence for a long moment before she let out a sigh and let her shoulders sag. "breezefeather... he has been pretty worked up lately, huh?" shadowcall dropped the tendril from her mouth. "are you surprised? you know how close breezefeather and wolfsong were. he was his mentor, and they were attached at the hip, always. and he found him?" at that, stormbreeze shuddered and shadowcall dropped her gaze. "i mean, some of us can hope that the others are still out there and can come back, but... wolfsong's gone." "he was a good cat," stormbreeze murmured, and shadowcall hummed her agreement. for a moment, there was silence between them. then, stormbreeze turned to look to where the camp's entrance once stood. "i keep thinking that i see a shadow out of the corner of my eye, and that it's volewhisker coming back to us. and then i blink and i know that it was just my imagination. it's too quiet in camp without the others," she said, and shadowcall abandoned her work to cross over to stormbreeze. she sat beside the queen, who leaned her head on the older warrior's shoulder. "fishleap always hated the quiet," shadowcall said, lifting her chin to gaze up at the overcast sky. "i still remember when we left our old clan with hailstorm. it feels like so long ago. i guess it was, with how much has changed since," she paused and scuffed her forepaw against the ground. "hailstorm was just so quiet and sure of himself. and i wanted so badly to be like him, to have his strength and wisdom, you know. so i mimicked everything he did. but fishleap... he just wanted to have fun and see the whole world. fishleap and i... we were so young then, but even now he's the same. always bounding with energy, looking for some new adventure, even if it was never further than the end of his nose." shadowcall managed a laugh of her own, and stormbreeze fit herself even further into the darker tabby's side, offering comfort through her closeness, shadowcall allowed herself to lean her head against stormbreeze's. "but he's also so bad at being alone. and he hated when we first came to smokeclan, always complaining about how the ash turned his paws gray. he would hate all of this. i can't imagine him out there, lost and confused, not knowing that we're here, and that he could just come home." there was a lump in her throat at the thought of her best friend, so disoriented and alone, so painfully alone. "maybe he's with volewhisker now," stormbreeze said, thinking of her mate. she smiled, though it was bittersweet, hopeful but with the knowledge that it was just that: hope. "he was so excited, when we found out that i was having kits. all he wanted was a family, and to have a family that stayed together. and i want him here, i wish... i don't know what i wish, other than that he was safe, and that he was here." "they might be together," shadowcall said, but her voice wavered, and stormbreeze shuddered with a silent sob. "they'll be here soon, they just had to make a quick stop to catch a mouse first, because volewhisker wanted to bring you one, and because fishleap wanted to explore a new stream first. but they'll be here..." shadowcall's words sounded false, even to her own ears, but she didn't recognize the way he own body wracked with sobs until it was too late, and she leaned against stormbreeze, who leaned against her. shadowcall thought of hailstorm, who hadn't made it out of the fire. she thought of his steady wisdom and sure strength, and of fishleap, and she wished that he was still out there, even if it meant that he was alone. because that would mean that he wasn't dead. and she didn't want her best friend to be gone forever.
the stars hung low in the sky, it seemed, when the forest was more open than breezefeather ever remembered it to be. the blaze tore the forest open, exposing the ground to the sky so they could meet, and the very thought made his whiskers tremble. it was a lovely sight, he thought, with the bright, full moon just above his head, in full view when he would normally only catch slivers of it through the thick canopy. it was a lovely sight, but one that demanded a high price, and there were too many who would never see it. "you would said you always hated the open sky," breezefeather said to the empty space at his side, where his mentor would always sit. "but i think it's quite nice. it doesn't feel as threatening as you said. the moon looks even more peaceful the longer i look at it. you would've liked it." but there was no answering voice, no brush of fur against his flank, no cackling laugh that breezefeather had come to know just as well as his own over the moons. it was a phantom ache, like losing a limb, an extension of himself that was forever lost, never to be brought back. there was the sound of fur dragging across the ground, and breezefeather twisted quickly, only to see spiderstar approaching. the smaller tom sniffed absently when he reached breezefeather's side, and said nothing for a long moment, just raised his eyes to the night sky above them. "has starclan spoken to you recently?" spiderstar asked at last, and breezefeather stared into the leader's side profile before slowly shaking his head. spiderstar's whiskers twitched, but his expression remained impassive otherwise. "i thought that was the case. but you still try to speak to him. do you think he'll answer?" again, breezefeather stared at spiderstar, as if waiting for some indication of what the dark tom was thinking, but he received nothing. "i don't know," he answered honestly. "but i know that he would be listening if he could." his paws still ached, days later, from the length of time it took to dig his mentor's grave, but he hadn't been willing to let anyone help him. wolfsong was his mentor, his best friend, he who was always there for him, through all of it. from the very beginning, when he taught breezefeather about herbs, to supporting him when dustmask and dappledsky accused him of murder, to protecting him when tidegaze tried to kill him, wolfsong had always been there. until suddenly he wasn't. "i keep thinking that i see my father in the shadows, walking around. he was always so strong, it's just so hard to believe that he could be..." spiderstar swallowed the words down and turned to breezefeather at last. "these last few moons, ever since shadestar died, were hard on him. i know it, so i think that they would be happy to be together again but... i also wish he was here." "or dustmask," breezefeather added, and spiderstar stiffened at the mention of the missing deputy. spiderstar dipped his head, acknowledging the statement. "dustmask too," he echoed, and his blue eyes glazed over thoughtfully. "he wasn't here. he made it out. we both know him too well, he'll come back to smokeclan. him, and the others." his expression was clouded, and breezefeather nodded his head slowly. "icecloud is out there too, starclan will guide her back. her, and crowflame, cloudstorm, and nightshade." spiderstar hummed, but it was sound that came from faraway, his mind elsewhere. "icecloud always was a wanderer. she'll be back, in her own time. if starclan is good.... is starclan good?" spiderstar asked, and his eyes regained focus. he cut his glance to breezefeather, who felt his words catch in his throat. "what i said, was i right? does starclan want us to survive, or did they try to kill us all?" "starclan wants the best for us," breezefeather said, too quickly. he suddenly felt his head spin, and he felt dizzy, disoriented, like the entire world tilted. "starclan doesn't want to end smokeclan, we've just had some bad luck." "or we're unlucky," spiderstar said, and there was a bitterness to his tone. he stood abruptly and turned his back to breezefeather, pausing only long enough to speak once more. "if wolfsong or shadestar or hailstorm are listening to you... tell them that they need a send us a little more help if we're to make it through the next moons." with that, spiderstar stepped into the shadows, out of the reach of starlight, and breezefeather was left to stare after him. ash wafted through the air in the clan leader's wake, floating like smoke, and he felt his nerves settle into melancholy. "help us," breezefeather whispered gently into the air at his side. "please help us." he couldn't be sure if the wind that brushed against his fur was an omen, or one of nature. he turned back to continue his vigil of watching the moon crest across the sky.
there was never a time in talonsight's life that he didn't feel as though he was the odd one out, kept to the side and cast out for no reason other than his odd-colored eyes, his white fur, and his parentage. when he thought of his mother, he thought of the times that rabbitpounce would tell him stories of the early days of smokeclan. he thought of her laugh, her smile, the warmth of her fur. he tried not to think of her death, her body brought back to camp. he tried not to think of bramblestreak, who loved rabbitpounce so much, who vowed to protect the kit she left behind. he tried not to think of how he was forced to watch his father kill his mentor in front of him, all because tidegaze had been jealous of bramblestreak, even after tidegaze killed rabbitpounce. talonsight tried to block out the visions of blood, the seasons of loneliness that passed by and by while the rest of the clan pushed him away as a conspirator, an instigator, one to be kept a close eye on, as if he would become his father in front of their eyes. there were few cats that he could count on. mousepatch and shrewbelly, who were friends to him, even after they saw how his father acted, who took him under their wing when the rest of the clan might have preferred to see him flee. even blizzardslash, who was, for a word, dangerous. still, they leaned on one another for the secret that they shared: that it was not tidegaze who killed shadestar, but blizzardslash. blizzardslash, tidegaze's apprentice, killed the beloved shadestar in cold blood, but it was tidegaze who rose up against spiderstar and demanded that the leadership of the clan be relinquished. and talonsight, who convinced blizzardslash to stop following tidegaze, that she could live a different life. was blizzardslash trustworthy? no, not as far as talonsight was concerned. she wasn't innocent, she wasn't a cat who could be given free reign, but he thought that, maybe one day, she could be. she could be, he supposed, if he found her. which was why talonsight spent nearly all of his time outside of the camp, searching for his friends. while the others stayed close to camp, hunting what they could and scrounging materials to build up some defenses, talonsight dared to venture further out on his own, even in the dead of night, calling out the names of his friends. "mousepatch!" he hissed, then fell silent, testing the air for any sign of her scent, then began to move again when he heard nothing other than the wind moving through the the remains of tree branches and the burned husks of bushes. "shrewbelly!" but, so far away from the other cats in camp, it was easy for talonsight to believe that there was no other cat for the rest of the world, like he was the only cat left alive. ash clouded his vision, made scents murky and blend until they were unrecognizable. he thought of how scared he was when the blaze tore into the camp, of how he barely managed to squeeze out with his life, how there were so many cats who had passed on, never to walk out of the camp again. instead their spirits were lifted up or dragged down, their bodies buried. "blizzardslash!" he couldn't even be certain that any of them were still alive, but a pull in his gut told him otherwise, and he knew, in the back of his mind, that his friends were out there, just out of reach. like if he walked a little further, stayed up a little longer, they would return. so he set one paw in front of the other, then again, then again, and again, and again, calling out their names and thinking of rabbitpounce's smile, how she would encourage him to work a little harder, until he met his goals he set for himself.

just when it seemed that the ash had begun to settle and that the forest might become easier to navigate after the fire, the skies opened and brought down the snow until it lay over the land in a thick, suffocating blanket. any prey that survived the blaze had moved on to get far away from the scorched earth, or nestled deep out of reach in the tree trunks that remained standing, not to return until after the thaw came. as shadowcall picked through the snowbanks, up to her chest in slush that stuck between her paw pads and chilled her down to the bones, she thought that, for a moment, she could be fooled that nothing bad had ever happened. the white expanse before her was so pristine, so pure and vibrant in its swath of white, that she could have imagined that there was never a fire, that there had been no clogging ash and soot. only this, with the snow and freeze, only this, where there was no sign of death. now, she would turn and fishleap would be shaking snowflakes from his fur; now, he would complain about the cold. but she knew that fishleap was far out of reach, still lost to her, and that the remains of the forest was buried until the piles of snow. and so she continued forward, propelled by the hunger that nestled in her stomach and the knowledge that kits were coming. kits, who needed to be fed if they were to survive to see newleaf with their mother. shadowcall set out on patrols as often as she could, even with the snow. the clan needed to be fed, the clan needed its borders protected when they were so vulnerable from outside attacks from other cats and predators alike, and the clan needed its members to return, to be led home, to grow their numbers and to boost morale. shadowcall wasn't the only one constantly looking over she shoulder, expecting to see a loved one standing there. a moon passed of venturing out, calling names to the sky and praying to starclan that one of their own would return from the unknown. yet, still, nothing. there was no sign of other cats, and even shadowcall was beginning to grow wary with each passing day. and yet, just as the cold began to make her teeth chatter and send her back to camp to warm up, lest she catch a cold or have breezefeather fuss over her, she saw it. there, a distinct paw print pressed into the packed snow, and shadowcall angled her ears to try and catch any passing noise or voice. most smokeclan cats had darker pelts, with the exception of talonsight, whose pelt allowed him to blend in when it came to the leafbare snows while others stood out, but were able to blend into the shadows during the other seasons. which meant that it was difficult for even the most skilled smokeclan warrior to hide during leafbare, even more so when there was so little cover spared the fire's fury. like a prayer, it didn't take much longer for shadowcall to find a pair of tracks, then to catch the familiar smokeclan scent on the breeze, even as muddled as it was with the snow and fire. over the crest of another snowbank, between two burned trees, shadowcall spotted the mother and her daughter, faces that she had watched grow over too many seasons to not recognize. "icecloud!" she called, and the familiar warrior turned quickly towards shadowcall, back arched protectively over her kit, only to relax when she spotted shadowcall. they met halfway, noses brushing, and icecloud's laugh was relieved, happy, and breathless. "shadowcall - thank starclan, it's good to see you," icecloud said, and shadowcall tracked her eyes over spiderstar's sister. whereas spiderstar was lithe and small, icecloud leaned closer towards their father's frame. though not as large as her father or cloudstorm were, she had the same set of her shoulders, the same muscle that hailstorm had in his prime. while spiderstar was built for speed and climbing, icecloud had always been the fighter, shadowcall saw over the moons of watching them grow up from the early days, when shadestar was first in the nursery. swanpaw huddled at icecloud's side, but her smile was sweet and genuine when shadowcall's eyes passed over her. she was still young, hardly more than a kit, and she shivered against the bitterly cold wind. "my brother... spiderstar, is he -?" icecloud began, and shadowcall nodded once. icecloud's shoulders relaxed instantly. "spiderstar, breezefeather, me, talonsight, and stormbreeze found each other shortly after it happened," shadowcall said while she began to lead icecloud and swanpaw back the way she had come originally, tracking back over the trail left behind from earlier. the three of them climbed through the snow, shadowcall and icecloud helping swanpaw get over some of the higher patches of snow as they went. "we've been trying to stay in camp, to keep stormbreeze protected while she has her kits and in case anyone comes back." "how bad is it?" icecloud asked shortly, her voice lowered. she had sent swanpaw ahead to scout the immediate area, told her to try and scent the air, to make sure they were going the right way. shadowcall blew out a sigh. "bad. we lost a lot of cats, icecloud. a lot of good cats," she said, and icecloud ducked her head. shadowcall touched her tail to the molly's flank, and shook her head slightly when icecloud met her glance. "you should know... hailstorm -" but icecloud didn't let shadowcall finish. her expression was pulled taunt, unreadable. "i kind of figured. i hoped but... i tried to get to the elder's den but... there was so much fire, i couldn't... not when swanpaw needed me." icecloud ducked her head again, swallowing around the words lodged in her throat. "i hope he'd forgive me. i hope that he's with shadestar now, that's where he's wanted to be for a long time, ever since she died." shadowcall could only nod at that, and icecloud stood to shake out her fur. shadowcall followed her, and icecloud called out for swanpaw before looking back to the older warrior. "any sign of crowflame, cloudstorm, or nightshade?" she asked. "nothing, i'm sorry." shadowcall said, and icecloud managed a tight smile at last, just as swanpaw bounded through the snow, back towards them. "let's hope no news is better than news, then." icecloud then met swanpaw and touched her nose to her daughter's cheek. "let's get home, i'd like to see my brother and the others."
finally, there was some trace of hope when shadowcall brought icecloud and swanpaw back to camp while on one of her patrols. immediately, breezefeather rounded the pair up and hustled them into the den he made for himself, to check for any signs of sickness or injury that might have come from the fire or wandering through the snow for so long. of course spiderstar was happy for his sister's reason, and that his niece was safe as well. swanpaw was so young, so small, and it would have been a shame if harm found the young molly. however, spiderstar couldn't help but feel that he should be even happier, that he should feel even less alone than he currently was. the snow in the camp had turned to slush from being walked over time and time again, turning the ground muddy and cold to the touch, but spiderstar settled with his tail laid neatly at his side, and his paws began to go numb, but he ignored it. a flash of white at the edge of his vision caught spiderstar's attention, and his head snapped in time to watch talonsight padding from the makeshift warriors' den towards the entrance of the camp. "talonsight," spiderstar called out to the younger tom, who turned at the sound of his name, ears pricked but tail low. talonsight looked exhausted, spiderstar realized. they were all exhausted, he knew, and it was beginning to take a toll. "have you seen anything while you've been out there?" spiderstar asked, and talonsight paused mid-step, as if unsure what he could say. at last, he dropped his head and spiderstar had an answer. icecloud and swanpaw's return was a miracle, perhaps sent by the grace of starclan, as shadestar and hailstorm protected their eldest kits, and he felt his stomach ache with hunger, yes, but also fear and grief. "i was just going out to try hunting again," talonsight said, shuffling his paws when spiderstar looked at him again. "shadowcall said it was getting a little warmer with the sunlight, and since icecloud and swanpaw are back, i figured it would be good to try and find something for them." his mismatched eyes strayed over spiderstar's shoulder, where the leader knew that their little prey was sodden and skinny, hardly anything of substance to feed the hungry clan cats. then their eyes met, and spiderstar hesitated, struck, as he often was, of how much talonsight looked like his father. tidegaze had been an imposing presence, even before his true nature revealed itself. he was lithe, but lanky, with long legs and hard muscles from moons of being a warrior. tall, with eyes that stared not at a cat, but through them, as if he could see a cat's very bones, their very thoughts, and what made them tick. tidegaze had been a force to be reckoned with, and he used his might not for the good of smokeclan like he would have had his followers believe, but to kill the innocent and weak who were in need of protection. and, standing before spiderstar was his very mirror image, a reflection pulled from the past: talonsight. however, even spiderstar wasn't blind to the distinct difference that marked talonsight as different from his father. whereas tidegaze looked through cats with a hard, cold glance, talonsight looked at cats with tenderness and gentle curiosity that spiderstar remembered from when rabbitpounce was alive. "that's a good idea, thank you," spiderstar said, and talonsight dipped his head to his leader before continuing on his way. spiderstar glanced at the prey pile once more, and felt his nose wrinkle distastefully. he thought again of those who hadn't made it out of the fire, and those who were lost from the clan, but he also thought of his sister and niece, who needed warmth and food. he thought of shadowcall and talonsight, who had been working themselves harder than he ever would have asked them to. of breezefeather, who held his head low but continued as normally as he could, and of stormbreeze, readying herself to have her kits without her mate at her side. spiderstar couldn't help the lost, not now, but he could help the cats in front of his face, who still stood with him as members of smokeclan. and, right now, they needed to be fed. "talonsight!" spiderstar called, and the white warrior turned just as spiderstar stood and shook out his fur. "mind if i join your hunt?" he asked, and talonsight's eyes were round with surprise. "of course, spiderstar."
breezefeather hadn't slept well since the fire, and he doubted that he would ever have a restful night again. every waking moment, he was disturbed by the memories of what came before. when he passed the ashes of the apprentices' den, he thought of darkpaw and blazepaw, of thornpaw and leopardpaw, and the other apprentices, of which only swanpaw was left, and the little molly refused to sleep by herself in the corpse of a bush, but shared a nest with icecloud. when he helped stormbreeze settle into the makeshift nursery, he thought of snowtail, and her young kits that had been buried between their mother and thunderheart. of the warriors' den, there were too many to list, too many friends that had been lost to the flames, who haunted breezefeather's peripherals, just out of reach; ghosts lost to him, lost even in dreams, when he tried to reach out and find starclan. but they were elusive, and breezefeather grieved heavily. most of all he grieved for wolfsong. his mentor, who found him when breezefeather was no more than a kit, who had only his own curiosities about dandelions. wolfsong, who taught him everything that he knew about healing and helping cats; wolfsong, who had always been a sturdy shoulder to lean on; wolfsong, who had supposed breezefeather through everything, from featherkit's death onwards; wolfsong, one of the truest cats, who was like a fog to breezefeather after his death. of all of the cats in starclan, breezefeather thought that his mentor would have come to him in such dire times. he slumped, rather than climbed into his nest. the cold had settled deep into his bones, chilling him until he forgot what it was like to not be shivering. with stormbreeze's kits on the way, breezefeather felt his entire body was resting on-edge, and he counted it as a blessing that icecloud and swanpaw were in good health when shadowcall brought them back, just tired and cold, just like the rest of the clan. his paws ached from walking in the snow for so long in search of herbs he knew likely wouldn't have survived the snow, and there was a distinct pounding in his head from being awake for so long with so little rest. at last, he managed to curl up and close his eyes. only for the sound of his name to snap him back into awareness, blinking into the snowy darkness of the burned camp. the voice was muffled, and fear struck deep, that stormbreeze was having her kits, and breezefeather scrambled to his paws as quickly as he could. he sped to gather the herbs he would need from his limited stores, only to turn back to find his beloved mentor sitting before him, his usual smile resting on his muzzle. breezefeather dropped the herbs, frozen with surprise, and he swayed on his paws for a long moment. he knew that it couldn't be real, he recognized stars woven into wolfsong's whiskers, and yet his heart pounded doubletime deep in his chest. "wolfsong?" the name came out as a choked whisper, and breezefeather felt his breath catch in his throat when wolfsong rose and padded forward until he could touch his nose to breezefeather's cheek. "where have you been?" wolfsong pulled back, and his smile was sad. "starclan is grieving, breezefeather. this fire... it was a hard hit to smokeclan, and you are so strong for standing after everything that's happened," wolfsong said. "starclan never wanted this to happen, it was never supposed to happen. smokeclan... this was not how it's supposed to be. cats aren't meant to die like this." "where have you been?" breezefeather asked again, begging his mentor this time. "i've been praying to you, but you never even gave me a sign that you were listening. where have you been? why has starclan not answered us?" wolfsong recoiled as if breezefeather struck him, but instead of speaking, he gestured toward the camp's clearing, and led breezefeather out into the open. together, they crossed the snow that had settled in camp after a recent storm. wolfsong's paws did not leave a mark where he walked, and breezefeather's chest tightened at the reminder. out in the clearing, the sky stretched wide above their heads, and wolfsong tipped his head back to the burning stars, countless with the spirits of clan cats. "starclan is looking for answers, looking for our friends. we don't know why the fire came, and we're trying to bring back our clanmates," wolfsong said. "shadestar and hawkpelt, and hailstorm and me... we're working hard for you. shadestar sent rabbitpounce, windrunner, and sweetpoppy beyond our skies to search for answers and signs. we haven't answered because we're trying to help, breezefeather. please, understand that we haven't abandoned smokeclan. we're here." he jutted his nose up to the sky, to point where starclan resided, and breezefeather let out a sigh, letting his shoulders slump. wolfsong padded closer to his apprentice. "we need you to stay strong. we're doing what we an, but smokeclan can't lose the faith. remember that we're here for you, for smokeclan." wolfsong leaned forward, resting the top of his muzzle on the crown of breezefeather's head. "take care of them, but also take care of yourself." "i can't," breezefeather choked out, wishing more than anything to be able to lean against wolfsong and feel supported. "you're gone, dustmask is gone. everyone is gone, and i'm going to let them down." "you won't, you know you won't," wolfsong argued. "you're a good cat, breezefeather, and one of the best medicine cats. believe in yourself, your clan believes in you." slowly, wolfsong's brown tabby frame was beginning to fade, and daylight peeked over the horizon, into the cover of the burned trees. "i'm always with you, even if you don't hear me. i would never leave you." his pelt faded until only his eyes and smile remained. breezefeather had so much he wanted to say, wanted to ask, but then wolfsong was gone and breezefeather's eyes snapped open to take in bright sunlight and herbs scattered across the ground.
"you're a little lopsided on your left," shadowcall pointed out while she circled swanpaw's crouching form, and she ducked her head to nudge her nose against the young molly's flank. days earlier, spiderstar gathered the clan long enough for them to check in with progress being made on the camp's defenses and dens, the status of hunting, and to assign shadowcall as swanpaw's mentor. ever since, it had been shadowcall's priority to catch swanpaw up in her training, and she was rewarded in kind, as swanpaw quickly showed herself to be a fast learner. at shadowcall's comment, swanpaw immediately worked to straighten her crouch, and shadowcall hummed encouragement. "better. hold that, just like that," she said, and swanpaw didn't budge when her mentor moved away. shadowcall judged the distance of several tail lengths before marking a place in the ground with a cross of scuff marks with her paw. then she stepped back and nodded to swanpaw, who watched with rapt attention. "i want you to leap forward from that crouch without a running start. see if you can make it to here," shadowcall said, and swanpaw's jaw shifted when she set her teeth and flicked her tail. determination settled in her eyes, and when shadowcall gave the slightest inclination of her head, swanpaw launched forward. the apprentice's forepaws grazed the closer edge of the mark, and she heaved in a breath while shadowcall purred her praise when swanpaw looked to her for an assessment. "that was good," shadowcall praised, beckoning swanpaw over. "i didn't actually expect you to make it that far, and that was a great first try. we'll try more over the moon, get your speed and agility up and work on building muscles that'll be useful for anything more advance." "my mom tried to teach me a few moves while we were wandering, looking for uncle spiderstar," swanpaw said, encouraged when shadowcall pricked her ears, curiously. "she said it would be good for if we ran into trouble. like to jump into the low branches of trees, a hunting crouch, and a few basic fighting moves." with that, swanpaw showed a few simple slashes that looked, to shadowcall, messy at best, but the seasoned warrior knew that icecloud had been right, and that it would be a good foundation to work on with swanpaw when the time came. "we probably won't work on fighting just yet, but it's good to know," shadowcall said, and swanpaw smiled to herself, ducking her head as if to hide it from shadowcall. "your mother's a good warrior, always has been," shadowcall said, as she led her apprentice back towards the camp. "she'll be proud to hear of how well you've been doing in such short time already." this time, swanpaw wasn't bashful when she smiled, and it warmed shadowcall's heart. "i just wish that a few of the others were here to train with," swanpaw said after a long moment, when there was a lull, broken only by the crunch of snow under their paws. "juniperpaw and i always talked in the nursery of how we would train together, and she always told stories of how she would get big enough to catch hawks from the sky." in that moment, shadowcall couldn't bare to look at swanpaw, and instead she looked down at her paws. "it seems so silly now, and even then. cats can't catch hawks from the sky, and juniperpaw made it seem like she was going to be the size of two tigers that hailstorm always told us about. it's silly, and i think even then i knew that it wouldn't happen like we said it would but... i at least thought that if we couldn't catch hawks, that at least we would be together, you know?" swanpaw said, and shadowcall finally forced herself to meet swanpaw's gaze. the young molly managed a tight smile. "i just hope that wherever she is, she's safe and warm. if she's not here, i want her to be happy." "i'm sure she is," shadowcall managed to say, and swanpaw nodded slowly, sagely. "maybe there can be a hawk there, too. a little one that flies low to the ground, so juniperpaw can catch it, too."
they had buried hailstom by the stream, at a spot that looked out across a meadow when the weather turned warm and the flowers began to bloom, though spiderstar had to clear away snow with a sweep of his tail, and ice had formed at the edges of the stream as the temperature continued to drop. at last, when the snow had been cleared, spiderstar settled down beside icecloud, who leaned her head on her brother's shoulder. "i miss him," icecloud whispered, the words nearly lost under the sound of the stream, and spiderstar leaned his head against his sister's. they supported one another in that moment, and he reveled in the closeness that they had always shared, and would continue to share now that she had returned. "i'm glad you're back," spiderstar said, and icecloud's blue eyes swept across their father's grave. "i thought... i feared that you were gone, and that i wouldn't find you. i was worried, after mom, and dad... i couldn't lose you too." "and you haven't," icecloud said simply, and spiderstar nodded once. there was another long moment before icecloud pulled away, disentangling herself from spiderstar. she turned to face him. "i know that we haven't always told each other everything," she said after a moment, and spiderstar nodded slowly, tracking his gaze over her face. "but i think now's the time to start being honest, okay? no more secrets." "no more secrets," spiderstar echoed before he shifted his paws and straightened up. "swanpaw's father?" he asked, and icecloud's expression shifted, tightening for just a moment before it eased again, and she huffed out a laugh. "from another clan but it... doesn't matter anymore. i haven't seen him in moons." spiderstar's whiskers twitched, but icecloud didn't offer anything further, and he didn't pry. instead, he appeared to be waiting, and icecloud's previous laughter evaporated, her smile gone. "not a question, but something you need to know. you haven't been yourself in a long time, and cats are starting to notice. they were looking at you differently before the fire, after tidegaze... you became someone i didn't recognize, and cats were whispering, spiderstar. they weren't trusting you." spiderstar's brow furrowed, as if he wasn't understanding, and icecloud's shoulders slumped. "we were worried about you, me and dustmask. dad, crowflame, nightshade, cloudstorm. hawkpelt, too, and stoneclaw. you were acting like you didn't trust any of us, and the other warriors were noticing. they were talking, wondering if you were still a fit leader." "i don't understand -" spiderstar began. his tail tip was flicking anxiously, his eyes darting from side to side. but icecloud hushed him quietly and drew her younger brother close, wrapping a paw around her neck to pull him towards her. and he went easily. "i'm telling you because i care, and i don't want you to be hurt. i want you back, the you i know, okay?" icecloud said, and spiderstar murmured his agreement, though he still didn't understand, couldn't decipher what she was saying to him. "you've been through a lot, and i know that you feel like you're alone, after everything that's happened. but you're not alone. i'm here, i'm always here. you can't get rid of me, i'm here for you." it came as if from afar, at a distance, but spiderstar realized that he was trembling, his entire body shaking as icecloud spoke to him. "whatever darkness you're thinking is there, i need you to let it go. be yourself, for me. be like spiderheart, before you became leader, please, spiderstar, be my brother again. be yourself." "i'm me," spiderstar heard himself say, then again. "i'm me." and again, and again, and again. again, until the words burrowed deep in his belly, resting there, and in the back of his mind. again, imprinted in icecloud's fur. "it's me," he said, and again, again, again, as a mantra. and, for just a moment, he could imagine that the shadows began to recoil from the world, dissipating until they were no more.
a flurry of snow signaled the bird erupting from where it had been seeking seeds through the snow under one of the trees before talonsight pounced, lauching towards it. the chaffinch shot upward. it was fast, but so was talonsight, and he twisted, fast on his paws, and hunger sharpened his senses. his claws caught a feather, then the wing, and his outstretched paws snagged the bird, bringing it crashing down with him into the snowbank. for a moment, talonsight thought that it was lost when he sprawled on his back, but the bird spluttered, cawing, trying to escape the hunter, but he found his footing and pursued. at last, the prey was lying at his paws, and talonsight released the breath he'd been holding. the bird was no great catch, skinny from the slim chance of finding food, but it was better than nothing, he supposed, better than returning to camp without anything at all, and the few mouthfuls would go a fair way, at the very least, if it needed to. and it did. with that in mind, talonsight scooped up his catch and began the walk back towards camp, stopping only once when he reached one of the streams that crisscrossed smokeclan's territory. he dropped the bird and bent his head. the water was cold, freezing, to the touch, but he drank greedily. it would be enough to stave off his hunger for a little longer, until he could return to camp with the hopes that one of the others had brought something back as well. when he finished, he blinked his eyes open and caught sight of his own reflection in the water. his eyes staring back at him, his whiskers dripping water. one of the drops fell, and talonsight watched as his face was distorted by the ripple until it was only a smudge of white in the running water. then the ripple moved out, and his reflection returned. however, in that moment, the breeze stirred the air, carrying a voice, calling out to him, and talonsight whipped around, just in time to see a shape moving swiftly between the trees. he saw pale fur, the shape of a lithe cat bounding away from him, and talonsight's first instinct was to give chase. "hey!" he called, but the cat didn't slow, and talonsight kicked up snow when he picked up speed, momentarily abandoning the chaffinch beside the stream. "blizzardslash!" he shouted, hoping that it was the other molly running from him, as if she was playing some sick game. or perhaps she was scared, startled, or didn't recognize talonsight. but he had always been faster than blizzardslash, even when they were just kits. he pressed forward, his muscles burning from exertion, and his legs pumped, but the cat seemed to glide above the snow. whereas talonsight sent snow flying in his wake, the pale cat appeared unbothered, moving gracefully. the cat made a quick turn, and talonsight moved to try and catch up, to try and cut them off, but there must have been a root sticking out under the snow, for the next thing talonsight knew, he was on his back, staring up at the open sky. his head swam, and his legs burned. he felt disoriented, like the world had been flipped over, and it was when his vision was still misted with uncertainty of what had happened, and blocked from the snow falling around him, that talonsight tipped his head back at the sound of a laugh, of a familiar voice that chilled him more than the snow seeping into his pelt. and, in the distance, through the trees, he could have sworn that he saw the flash of mismatched, blue and green eyes. and then it was gone, and talonsight let his head fall back, his eyes close, and he sought to get his breath back. leader 6 lives remaining
