Chapter One New Beginnings
A surprise attack & freak accident cause Phoebe to lose both of her parents in a matter of forty-eight hours. Ambrose and Ariadne had been together for the majority of their lives, and so Phoebe found it almost fitting, in a strange sort of way, that the couple passed away within forty-eight hours of each other, one right after the next.
Phoebe sat at the top of the waterfall that flowed down into the northern part of the vale, her feet dangling in the cool running water, leaning back on the palms of her hands, feeling the warmth of the sun beaming down onto her face. It had been one month since she had been elected the new high priestess of The Unseen and she still struggled with her feelings about it all.
Sycamore & Maria deciding to stick together after Foxbane Village falls apart. Maria is still sad about the death of her wolf pet Archie, but is determined to forge a new path with her friend. Sycamore used to be a peacemaker, but after the attack from the humans wiped their village out, he had grown more cold.
Nehiti feeling like a failure as the bounty hunters from her past finally caught up to her and wiped out her village, minus two other survivors who escaped together while she tried to defend them.
The two shapeshifters had been together for years now, since they had been teenagers actually. Tola's parents had been killed by hate-filled humans while they were frolicking in a meadow of blooming flowers simply because they drunken humans hated the shapeshifters for what they did not understand. Tola was thirteen at the time, and had run off chasing a pretty butterfly; when she returned to the spot she had left her parents, she found the grass and trees and every living thing stained red with the blood of her parents. Tola refused to leave their bodies for three days, crawling along the ground to drink from the corrupted stream only enough not to die of dehydration before she returned to their bodies. Luckily for Tola, the humans were long gone by this point, because if not, she would have been an easy target to take out right then.
Tola had been found by another shapeshifter though, a boy just two years older than she was. He had heard the running water of the stream and approached for a drink, only to find this thin young girl practically wasting away in between two motionless corpses. She was too weak and frail at that point to fight back or use any energy as this boy, who introduced himself as Leo, easily lifted her body in his arms and carried her off to where he had been staying. Tola had fallen unconscious in his strong arms, and when she woke up, she was under a makeshift sort of covering, wrapped up in a blanket, warm from a nearby fire that was cooking a lovely scented soup. As she ate, Leo explained to her that he had been on his own for most of his life, and had sort of learned to just make due with what he had. They vowed then to remain friends forever, to stick by each other's side no matter what.
The pair had stumbled across the village of Bellmare by mistake one day, a group made up entirely of other shapeshifters like themselves. It was still small, still new, but it was supposed to be a safe haven for their kind. Unfortunately, that sense of safety only lasted a year or two before an attack from an enemy village of humans who were unhappy being so near to a village of 'freaks' came and destroyed their new home. The few surviving shapeshifters scattered into the wind, but of course Leo and Tola stayed together, as they always swore they would. They had been on their own for only a month or so before they came across the village known as the expanse; the group lived in freezing cold temperatures that the pair of shifters were not accustomed to, but they managed for about a year.
You see, they knew that eventually they would have to move on, because in this new home, they had to pretend to be humans; it was easy enough for Leo to pretend to be something like that, for he was always a very friendly and outgoing guy, but Tola struggled to keep her true feelings hidden as the humans around them talked so poorly of what they referred to as outsiders, or basically anyone who was non-human. Their secret was revealed one day by pure accident; one of the men of the village tried to have his way with Tola, and like the fighter she was, and grappled with the man who dared touch her. But during her fit of anger, she accidently shifted, and as Leo came to his friend's aid, both were locked into a hut like prisoners while the villagers decided what to do with them. They expected to be killed, but the shaman was a kind woman who spared them the fate of execution by unlocking their door in the dead of night and helping them escape, with the promise to never come back.
It had been about a year since then, and Tola had grown to despise the consideration of being part of any village or group after the tragedies that had befallen them in their last two homes. However, there was something special about this place; the pair could tell even just in the way the air around them felt. As they galloped through the hills, they came across a rocky mountainside filled with dark openings leading in all directions. As the pair shifted back into their human forms, they began to argue about which path they should take, which way to go. Luckily for them, at that precise moment, a small group of three came out of one of the darkened cave entrances; a witch, a nymph, and a tiefling. The witch quickly introduced herself as the high priestess of a hidden village, as well as introduced her two companions as the sentry and a scout of that same village. These ranking names were unfamiliar to the two shapeshifters, but that didn't matter at the end of the day; they were offered a place to safely lay their heads that night, and while Tola was initially uncertain about this idea, Leo convinced her to give it a try. Then one night turned into two, which turned into a week, then a month, and then the pair had been in the Unseen for a year. After all of their pain and heartache, they had finally found a place to truly call home.
